I had a great time and enjoyed the scenery and solitude and the history. I chose to camp at the old shearers shed, it seems to have a little more nostalgia than the other Homestead camping site and the bush was a little more interesting to explore.

Walking around the park is reasonably easy as it consists of flat sandy plains and areas of spinifex but apart from the tracks and creek bed that loops through the park the terrain is featureless and there is nothing to visually navigate from. All of the little clearings start to look the same after a while and the scrub is thick enough that you usually cannot see more than a couple of hundred metres.

I only had a day and a half there but in truth I don’t think that I need much longer.

My visit was cut short by the weather beginning to look nasty and I did not want to get caught in there after heavy rain or drive on the tracks once they were wet and cut them up.

Do not wander off if you are not experienced at walking and navigating in the bush and make sure at the very least you take a compass and know how to use it. Make sure you maintain awareness of which way you are traveling and which direction the tracks or creek bed are from you. If you study the map beforehand you should always be able to find your camp from these. Read the parks website as to what to take with you to stay safe.

What a hidden gem is Thrushton NP. It does not have gorges or waterfalls or monolithic rock formations. It has no facilities or walking tracks. What it does have is beautiful almost untouched mulga bushland and the associated wildlife that live there. If you are looking for some natural, remote and serene camping and walking without crowds then this is the place. Be warned that there are no facilities at all so you need to be completely self-sufficient. The reasonably long drive in like most National Parks is over a lot of gravel roads but they were not in bad condition. The tracks in the park were in excellent condition and look like they had been recently graded but some bad weather could change that.
